I cut the slit with a 1/8" carbide end mill. I didn't cut all the way through the bushing sleeve, because I didn't want to risk cutting into the arm. Instead, I left a thin bit of metal in the bottom of the slot. In one arm, that strip broke as soon as I removed the arm from the vise; the other required a tap with a hammer and chisel.
