Installation of the Exhaust Tip

installationoftheexhausttip.jpg

I thought I had ordered a chromed tip, but in fact it was stainless steel. Stainless steel has much worse thermal conductivity than ordinary carbon steel, so I had to be very careful welding it. If you just try to weld it in the usual way, you'll burn through. A better way is to build up a weld pool on the outlet tube, then just nudge it a bit over to the stainless steel edge. It's hard to do this and create an good looking weld, but not too hard to make one that is strong but ugly. Once it was welded, I masked the tip and sprayed some exhaust coating on the pipe, where I had sanded it off, and on the weld.
